a friend of mine died today. i have not seen her in 3 years. and that is truly my loss. at 19 she had cancer and had most of her left hand removed. never once did she let that keep her from living and enjoying her life. she was never a beautiful girl on the outside, but you could see her true beauty in her eyes. they sparkled with life and the love of it. she smiled with her eyes. at 21 she married a man who would and did do anything for her. after 5 years she was declared officialy cancer free and she went ahead and had 2 beautiful little girls a year apart. they are now 5 and 6 years old. 6 months ago the cancer returned. she developed a large tumor in her left arm just above the wrist. her arm was removed from just below the elbow. for months after there was no sign of the cancer. a month ago she had trouble breathing. she went to her doctor and was told the cancer was back. this time in her lungs. last friday she went into hospital. today she died. she was 30 years old.
a year and a half ago i lost another friend of mine. describing him would be impossible. he never needed much to be happy. he just was. he was something of a daredevil. we lost count of how many cars he managed to wreck and he used to say he would die in a car. on mother's day 1999 he and a friend were driving home. less than a mile from his house his prediction came true. a 19 year old kid driving his daddy's new truck fell asleep at the wheel and drove over top of the small car my friend was in. the car was cut in half. when the emergency crews arrived they counted arms and legs to determine how many bodies they had.
i moved 3000 miles away from my home and all of my family and friends 3 years ago. for the most part i have been happy. now i am suddenly so very homesick. who else will disappear from my life before i get a chance to see them again? why when there are so many demented tortured souls on this planet does god choose to take the beautiful ones? in 3 short years 2 people with hearts of pure gold were lost to me and everyone who loved them forever. when you get up from your seat in front of this computer, pick up the telephone and call the ones you love most. tell them you love them. go and give them a hug. because someday it might be too late.

One of my brothers is dead by his own hand.
My other brother is slowly wasting away with the AIDS virus.
My mother is old and not long for this world.
I haven't seen any of my living relatives in years.
My life now prevents that and they think I've betrayed them.
I think so too.
